Superdaddy’s Buena Educación and Lessons on Linguistic Appropriateness

Emily was a 2nd-grader in Mrs. Drescher’s class whose parents, Cristián and Paloma, grew up with limited financial resources in a small town in Puebla, Mexico. Similar to many Mexicans from rural towns of their generation, they had attended school through the 6th grade and then had to leave because their families could not afford to pay the costs associated with their schooling. Cristián (30 years old), a clean-cut and charismatic man with dark wavy hair and a contagious smile, moved to Marshall for work opportunities in his late teenage years. During a brief return to his hometown, he and Paloma (27 years old) began dating and they returned to Marshall together. Paloma had a daughter from a previous relationship, whom she left in her mother’s care until she could bring her to Pennsylvania. In Marshall, their daughter Emily (8 years old) was born, and several years later their son Cristofer (1 year old) added to their family. Emily was in regular contact with her sister and grandma in Mexico, and she met them for the first time the summer after her 2nd-grade year.

As with many families, their home and work responsibilities did not represent static or traditional gender roles, such as stay-at-home moms and breadwinner fathers. Instead, they continually changed based on employment opportunities and family needs. For many years both parents worked several jobs and shared child-care duties. Once Emily’s baby brother was born, they decided that Cristián would work two full-time jobs, as his advanced spoken English abilities meant he could earn more as a manager for office cleaning services at night and as a landscaper during the day. Even with his exhausting work schedule, Cristián prioritized time with his family. He explained:
